Survey Shows Over Two-Thirds of Europeans Fear Threats
The survey, conducted during early January and spanning all 27 EU member nations, uncovered that 68% of participants view their homeland as facing significant threats.
France registered the most acute sense of vulnerability at 80%, with the Netherlands and Denmark close behind at 77%. Germany and the Greek Cypriot Administration each recorded 75% threat perception among respondents.
Personal safety concerns emerged as a pressing issue, with 42% of those surveyed expressing fears about their individual security.
Confidence in the EU to bolster continental defense reached 52%—a narrow but decisive majority. The highest trust levels surfaced in Luxembourg (76%), Portugal (74%), the Greek Cypriot Administration (73%), and Lithuania (71%).
Appetite for military investment remains robust across the bloc. A commanding 74% of Europeans either endorse existing defense budgets or advocate for expanded funding.
Lithuania led this sentiment at 80%, though Portugal topped the list at 89%. Finland registered 83%, while Spain and Denmark showed 80% and 78% support respectively.
Space policy emerged as a strategic security priority, with 53% identifying defense applications as paramount for EU space initiatives. Environmental and climate concerns followed at 36%, with industrial competitiveness capturing 31% of respondents' priorities.
